The Digital Era
Eastman Kodak developed the first digital cameras, but were unable to bring them to market, leaving that to the major Japanese companies, Canon, Nikon, and Pentax as well as electronics companies such as Sony.
Today those digital cameras give amazing results, well beyond the reach of film. Cell phone designers and manufacturers have added camera capabilities to smartphones which has effectively moved the amateur photography buyer to increasingly more sophisticated smartphones.
The traditional camera manufactures now sell mainly to professional photographers and serious hobbyist.
